NEWAIM Fiber Mill is run by people who understand fiber animals and the people who raise them. We bred alpacas for almost 10 years. We currently have a small herd of CVM/Romeldale sheep. Click here to learn more about this rare breed. Nancy has been knitting for as long as she can remember and she began hand spinning when we purchased our first alpacas in 1999. We purchased the mill in 2005 which Nancy runs and can turn your raw fiber into beautiful, saleable yarns and rovings. One of the advantages of the Mini-Mill equipment is that it facilitates the processing of small batches of fiber. People who raise fiber animals don抰 just want yarn back from the mill, they want their OWN yarn! There is nothing more rewarding than producing hand knit garments made from your own fiber. When you send your fiber to NEWAIM Fiber Mill, your fiber will be individually processed and returned to you.
Fiber processing in Midcoast Maine. Let us spin your fiber into beautiful yarns that you will be proud to say came from your animals. In the early 1900's there were many woolen mills here in Maine. Our many rivers and streams provided energy to run the machinery and the mills provided jobs for many of our citizens. That is not the case today. Maine's textile industry shrank steadily during the last century as the mills moved overseas in search of low cost labor. By the late 1970's, nearly all of Maine's woolen mills had closed. In a small way the textile industry is starting to make a come back to serve the cottage industry here in Maine. The alpaca herd is growing rapidly and the farms are looking for mills to process their fiber. There are also many small sheep and goat herds across the state. Spinning and knitting are now popular again and the fiber artists are looking for high quality, locally produced materials to use in their projects. All of this creates a need for small scale carding and spinning operations. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well here in Maine and several small scale fiber processing mills have opened to fill this need. |
